Do you get out the fancy plates for Thanksgiving? “Fancy” is a word that makes me laugh. Fancy-pants, take a fancy to someone, fancy footwork, fancy meeting you here, fancy that. They all sound funny to me. At a recent hotel stay, we got this drink voucher. So, our curiosity piqued, we had to see what these fancy drinks were all about.
Mine was basically an Old Fashioned, made with monkey shoulder whiskey, homemade caramel syrup, and they grated a block of pink Himalayan sea salt on it at the table, so I would agree that it was fancy.
Lynn had a spritz with passion elderflower syrup, fresh mint and some other exotic ingredients. Very fancy!
Of course vacations aren’t just about drinking, there is also eating. On special occasions we like to go out to a fancy dinner. At the end of the recent vacation Lynn and I went to a nice restaurant to celebrate. This was not a Michelin starred restaurant, but it was a sister to a more famous spot. It was the type of place where we had three different waiters taking care of various things in the first five minutes. Like I said, fancy.
One of things I enjoyed most was watching the kitchen. It was in a glassed in area where you could watch the chefs in action. You couldn’t hear them, and you really couldn’t see exactly what they were doing, but they were busy back there. You could see the great care and precision in their movements.
What I really enjoyed was watching the chefs as a dinner was brought out. A few times they would stand at the window and see how the patrons received their work. You could tell there was a real pride and confidence in what they were serving.
I liked the fact that they took pride in their work. And I liked that they took a minute to appreciate it. Like a chef and their diner, the lawyer and client relationship is intimate and direct. Watching this kitchen reminded me to slow down a little here in the holidays, a take a moment to appreciate some of the wins we’ve had at the office this year. In the face of many difficulties this year there is still a lot to be grateful for. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving.
